S Club 7’s Hannah Spearritt has dished further details on her dangerous new character in Casualty ahead of her debut this month.
It was announced in December the 34-year-old singer has secured a recurring role in the BBC One drama as Mercedes Christie.
And now she’s revealed further details on her ‘penniless, drug addict, on-the-run’ alter-ego, ahead of her first appearance in the BBC One hospital drama on Saturday January 23.
‘She’s really exciting to play. She’s a little bit of a drug addict. She’s recently – like in the last five months – split up with her boyfriend for reasons to do with debt,’ she told BANG Showbiz. ‘So she’s alone, she’s got a kid, she’s out of pocket and the debt collectors are after her.
‘She’s not totally a bad person but she’s pushed into the situation because of her circumstances.
‘She’s going through the park to try and sell her jewellery, which is probably worth about two pence, and then she spots a window of opportunity to get some money – she’s a manipulator, basically.
‘I’m in and out of hospital all the time. Then I’m on a drug raid, then on a drug sort of drop off and the police get a tip off and come after me.’
Viewers can look forward to Hannah’s upcoming scenes, most of which she’ll be starring in alongside McKenzie ‘Big Mac’ Chalker which might give pesky viewers further clues as to what’s in store for Mercedes.
Hannah certainly seems to be enjoying the new job, adding: ‘I absolutely love it and the atmosphere is really nice. Everyone makes me feel so welcomed.’
She revealed her new gig on Twitter in December:
And while she might only have just joined the cast, she’s proven her loyalty by posting this little video begging fans to vote for Casualty at tomorrow night’s National Television Awards, whilst also giving viewers a taste of what’s to come with her character.
Casualty is nominated in the Best Drama category, alongside Broadchurch, Doctor Who and Downton Abbey.
While Hannah is most famed for being a member of S Club 7 from 1998 to 2002, other acting credits include starring in sci-fi drama Primeval as well as Death in Paradise and Agatha Christie’s Marple.
Hannah will appear in Casualty from Saturday January 23.
