EVERY bit the easygoing lad of the Miami 7 heyday, Paul Cattermole reminisces fondly about his years with the band which propelled him to stardom. Although things, even then, were not quite as dandy as they appeared. On the face of it he had all, fame, a gaggle of fans at home and all over Europe (my brother and I leading the charge for the Paris contingent), chart-topping hits and his own TV show; but a growing frustration at constantly being sidelined, always a few paces behind the leads, had started bubbling up.

Tired of playing second fiddle, he eventually took a bow in 2002. A year later the rest of the group split. “I just wanted a chance to sing,” he says matter-of-fact. “When I first went for the band, it wasn’t actually an audition, it was an interview. I didn’t have to sing, which is a shame, and that was it. They were never going to let me sing in the band so they didn’t care whether I could sing or not – dear or dear!,” he brushes it all off lightly. “That’s why I ended up leaving,” continues Paul, who had already met band member Hannah through the National Youth Theatre before they were both cast in S Club 7. “I just wanted a decent song to sing. It didn’t have to be a single; I just needed it to be a decent song.” Nearly a year into his “first ever professional stage job” – or jobs – shouldering the roles of Eddie and Dr Scott in the latest national tour of Rocky Horror Show, he has more than made up for lost time, and crucially, proved his mettle as a singer worthy of airtime. Even though, he admits, the show’s conspicuous world of excess, fluid sexuality and enduring cult following, with its legions of mouthy (and armed – bag searches have become a pre-show ritual to root out improvised projectiles) groupies is worlds apart from his stock-in-trade. Audiences’ crude interruptions, relentless heckles and hair-trigger sallies are storied – and while these asides ensure the racy musical never gets stale, they have been known to blindside even the most seasoned of stagers.

“Sometimes it’s what generates the energy and it makes it tick along,” he enthuses. “This is not really printable,” he warns stifling a laugh. “But there have been three or four times when somebody has shouted something where I’ve had to literally hold down, really grip, to not be put off, start cracking up because it’s funny, or stop because you’ve completely forgotten what’s coming next. You’re flustered and knocked out of the groove. Once, in a very serious bit, someone shouted in a very strong Glaswegian accent, ‘Ball bag!’. It was one solo voice really loud. The accent gives it gravitas; the swearing has a certain strength to it.”

His foray into musical theatre may seem a tad left-field. But for Paul, who trained at the exclusive Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and only ever aspired to act, it has been decades in the making. Though, he confides, he had near on given up on theatre until his stint in Rocky Horror Show. Even then, as with anything in showbiz, he had to earn his place(s) fair and square.

“I don’t think I ever gave up but I’ve always gone where the work is. And there were many parts I wanted to play but for a while I didn’t think it would happen. But instead of being grumpy about it, I just carried on with other things,” he says without bitterness. “I did want to be an actor but you grow up and get a bit more realistic.

“I just went for it and auditioned. I wasn’t tracked down or anything,” he explains. “You vary rarely get headhunted, especially these days. Things have changed a lot, even in the days since S Club. There’s a lot more competition. You have to prove yourself and that can go on for quite a while. There are celebrity types who have done five, six shows and they’re still not accepted in the theatre world.

“I was a bit rusty,” he confesses. “When I was at drama school I was 20, I was really flexible and up with the dancing. Now my knees won’t let me do triple pirouettes,” volunteers the 39-year-old with a hint of derision. “And when you get into the big leagues of musical theatre that’s the bare minimum!”

“Back full circle”, he hasn’t reneged his time with the S Club 7 and his thoughts wander to the good times rather than the frustration of later years. The group’s spin-off TV shows gave him ample opportunity to scratch his itch to act, if not sing. It only takes a throwaway comment about his former bandmate and ex-girlfriend Hannah Spearritt’s pitchy squeal in the French version, to prompt an anecdote about the band’s dismay at Jo’s macho dubbing in German.

“The German one was the main one we got stuck on,” he laughs heartily. “Jo’s voice was so funny, I think it was a guy’s voice. It used to make us crack up.”

His close bond with his fellow bandmates, even after their split, convinced him, despite some initial misgivings, to agree to a reunion tour. It was a mixed bag by his own admission, but as is plain from his refreshingly candid answers and mellow outlook, he is not one for regrets or dwelling.

“It was a bit tricky but I fancied doing it. There was quite a lot of disagreement between the management about what sort of show we should be doing. They wanted to put on a show like we were all kids again and I thought we should be playing to our strengths and do a more mature thing. We made a bit of a mistake there but it’s done. I didn’t think it was very good,” he says breezily.

It certainly doesn’t get more ‘mature’ than Rocky Horror Show, what with the debauched transvestite scientist Frank-N-Furter, Brad and Janet’s sexual roundelay, expletives galore and all-around scantily clad cast – not least Paul.

Clearly, playing ragged and bloodied guinea pig Eddie and his wheelchair-bound uncle Dr Scott has stoked a new fire in him, or resurrected a hunger for the stage relegated by a stunted pop career.

“I love it everyday, I wake up, pull back the curtains and seize the day,” he booms. “This, now, is the highlight of my career. It’s definitely woken me up.”

S Club 7 star Paul Cattermole will be doing the Time Warp again on stage in The Rocky Horror Show but doesn’t think he will Bring It All Back with the band any time soon. The band, who starred in TV show Miami 7, had a reunion tour last year but he doesn’t seem keen to repeat that. Paul said: “I’m not really sure if it’s the kind of thing that’s going to work any more. “It has made a lot of people very happy and some of it made me happy but that’s way back in the past. “I have a nostalgic moment every once in a while but I’m hoping it’s not something that comes back.” He joined the band out of drama school and wasn’t asked to sing or dance at his audition, although he could. He said: “The alarm bells were ringing in my head and I should have listened to that. “I was going to be employed for my talking ability so that I could cover the interviews.” Paul said he had a great time in Miami filming the show, as well as hair-raising moments filming with an alligator. It was so hot that everyone was falling asleep on set. Paul remembers hoping the alligator’s wrangler, who was holding its tail out of the camera shot, wasn’t going to nod off too…
Paul had only seen the Rocky Horror movie before he auditioned for the dual roles of bad boy Eddie and his scientist uncle Dr Scott. He said: “When I saw the show live, it was awesome. It’s one of the best shows I’ve ever seen for script, comedy, music and characters. “The story isn’t too serious, which is one of the things I love about it as well. It’s as much fun to do as it was to watch. It’s such a great show to be in.” He’s had great fun putting on the fishnets as Dr Scott. He said: “I like the way people cheer for that moment when even the old doctor has got tights on.” The show is famed for audience interaction. Fans dress up and have set responses to lines. Paul said: “You come to the front of the stage and get to see a fair few Eddies in the audience. He’s a popular character.” He remembers working in Sheffield with music producer Eliot Kennedy. “That was 15 to 16 years ago and Elliot is the guy who wrote Bring It All Back. He pulls people up from London to Sheffield to work with him. He’s so good you’ve got to go up there to work for him. He’s such a lovely guy.” Paul was taken by Elliot to a Steelers game and loved the atmosphere. He said: “It was rocking to songs he’d written.”

Ahead of the famous Rocky Horror Show live starting its stint at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre tonight we sat down with Paul Cattermole who has taken on the role of Eddie and Doctor Scott – played by legendary musician Meatloaf in the film – to talk about his experience of the cult classic. Paul originally found fame as a member of pop sensations S Club 7, who achieved four UK number-one singles, one UK number-one album and a string of hits across the globe before their split in 2003. Paul shot back into the limelight in 2015 with a nostalgic reunion tour with the group, before taking on his roles in The Rocky Horror Show and he did not find the transition between music to theatre easy.
“It wasn’t easy no, but it wasn’t really hard. I have always enjoyed acting, I went to drama school, I was in the National Youth Music Theatre, and I’ve been on the stage since I’ve been fifteen. “Since doing S Club, it sort of made me not know what I really want to do, and I’ve been in a few rock bands before never necessarily with the intention of ever making it into a career just for the love of the music and that’s the same with theatre. “I had loads of coaching throughout the rehearsal stage, the director Chris Luscombe has just been so amazing with me because he was fully aware that I’m not someone exclusively from the pop-industry that’s going to be afraid of jumping in to the role but obviously I hadn’t been in it for so long so I needed some encouragement.”
The Rocky Horror Show isn’t simply a show, it’s a full-blown experience and Paul was inspired by his first experience of his show to jump at the chance of being a part of the cast. “When I first saw it live I genuinely thought it was one of the best nights out I had ever been to. It has such a rock and roll vibe mixed with such a funny storyline. When I last saw the show I hadn’t seen it for ages and I’d almost forgotten how many funny moments there are.
When approached by the show I really just fancied being any part, it was just something that I thought I could bring something to. I know I could never do it like Meatloaf, he’s one of a kind, but I just thought I could do a good job on the part so I just went for it and hopefully it’s going down well. The hardcore fanbase have seemed to really respond to what I do.” When taking on his roles, Paul hopes he doesn’t relate to them in anyway but like a true man of the stage – he is fully involved in his role at all times. “Eddie is sort of a fat slob, so I hope I don’t relate to that! “Eddie is a rock and roll frontman created by the lead character Frank who regrets making him, so Eddie jumps out the fridge on stage and does a two minute rock show which is the opportunity to do what you want. He’s a half-brained crazy man who apparently has no moral compass and that’s fun.
Within two minutes of a song you don’t really have much opportunity to show yourself and the character but at least if you’ve considered them they are there bleeding through in everything that you do” Aside from the fun had from playing a character with no moral compass, Paul has also had a great deal of fun with his fellow castmates – such as Liam Tamne and Diana Vickers. “The cast are all so lovely, and well-experienced. I feel really comfortable when I’m on stage that they’re the people that have got my back. “I’ve gelled with quite a few members of the cast, I really get on with Liam (Tamne) and Diana Vickers – I wouldn’t say we chat a lot but I get on with her great, she’s amazing to work around. “She plays a great Janet and she’s so funny, there’s a couple of times where she is proper laugh out loud funny and she really makes Janet her own. It’s amazing working with someone who is also from a pop background and for them to be really good at what they do, as sometimes there are people who come from our background that are not which is very frustrating. “We have a very experienced cast, Liam who plays Frank-N-Furter is amazing and Kristian (Lavercombe) who plays Riff Raff has been doing this for years he’s done over a thousand shows.”
Following this performance and the reunion tour of S Club 7 in 2015 – Paul has exciting things upon the horizon, but these do not involve his roots in pop music. “I’ve got nothing lined up but there’s a couple of things on the horizon. One of the guys from Miami 7 has written a musical and he’s sort of slightly hoping he can get me to be in it in the UK. “It’s cool that things like that are happening and the future is taking place. It’s so different from what I’ve done in S Club. I’m so proud of what I did with S Club, it may not be what I ultimately set out to do but I loved my time in the group and I would still love the opportunity to do some more things with the group but I think realistically S Club does not have the ability to do anything for long periods of time. “We can do one off things here and there I think but from what I’m getting from the other guys we don’t think a long thing would happen. “We didn’t do any new music last year and I really wanted to, I was very vocal about this and I said we can’t come back without new music and got completely over-ruled. “It’s good to have that nostalgic feeling but ultimately it’s important to be excited about the future.” Blending the worlds of his music and theatre career, we decided what it would be like to cast the fellow S Clubbers in The Rocky Horror Show alongside Paul. “Jon (Lee) would have to be Brad, Hannah (Spearritt) can be Janet, Tina (Barrett) can be Magenta, Rachel (Stevens) can be Columbia although all the girls could easily be Janet and there’s not enough girl parts. Brad (McIntosh) can be Frank, just so I can make him wear high heels and tights.

Media outlets have been reporting that Hannah and Paul have split. Is it true?

Fans of Noughties pop rejoiced when Hannah Spearritt and Paul Cattermole confirmed they were back together in June following S Club 7’s reunion tour. But the lovebirds, who first dated from 2001 to 2006, have allegedly called it quits again after just five months, parting ways due to their busy schedules but remaining ‘the best of friends’. The Reach hitmakers’ short-lived romance will no doubt come as a blow to Hannah’s ex-fiancé, personal trainer Adam Thomas, who she dumped in favour of her bandmate. A source told The Sun’s Dan Wootton: ‘Hannah and Paul had been apart for so many years and their chemistry came straight back on the tour. ‘But they both have different lives now and are doing different things. ‘Paul is now in The Rocky Horror Show which is about to go on tour, so they decided mutually that they would go their separate ways.’ MailOnline has contacted both Hannah and Paul’s representatives for comment.
