What were the highlights of  being in S Club?
Winning two Brits and  travelling the world. Our show was in 133 countries and we visited virtually all of them. We had our own dolls. Everything that a pop group should do, we did. It was a very exciting time. Doing the tours and seeing an arena full of people was quite overwhelming. We couldn’t believe everyone had come to see us. We did things such as the biggest phone call in the world with a million people phoning in and when our signings got cancelled because we’d caused a traffic gridlock, it made us realise how big we’d got.

What was it like when it ended?
We never had time to do anything in S Club. Every second was scheduled. My friends complained about my text messages – I didn’t have time to write anything longer than ‘yes’ or ‘no’. We were always being dragged from one place to the next. I was happy to step away from the band. I couldn’t have gone on like that for much longer. It was too much. I wanted to do other things with my life and S Club was all consuming. I never looked back.

What’s the worst gig you’ve done?
A Smash Hits Poll Winners’ Party – I did a big kick and the crotch on my trousers split. I didn’t even  notice until I got off stage.

You didn’t seem to sing much in S Club – did you want more leads?
With pop bands, you have your formula and I was never like: ‘I should sing more leads,’ but I did want to do my own stuff at some point. It has taken a long time but you only get one life and I thought: ‘Sod it, I’m going to do what I like.’ I want people to like it but you just have to go for it sometimes – it’s pointless worrying about what other people think of you.

Were you tempted to join Jo, Bradley and Paul on their tour of student unions?
They asked me but I needed to do something on my own before contemplating doing S Club. I also wanted to wait until all seven of us wanted to do it. They’ve done well though, they’ve been selling out  venues, so good on them.

There was a recent story that you’re all doing a reunion soon – is it true?
We’re all talking about  it and it’s a possibility. There’s nothing in the diary. I know a lot of the fans want it to happen. There are hard-core S Club fans out there. I get messages about how S Club helped them through tough times at school when they may have been getting bullied or having difficult experiences. It’s very cool to  hear that.
